    X = total people

    3/8x are children ... that leaves 5/8 remaining ...

    3/4 of remaining are men ... 3/4 (5/8) = 15/32x are men

    1/4 of remaining are women ... 1/4 (5/8) = 5/32x are women

    140 more women then children ... so children - 140 = women

    3/8x - 140 = 5/32x

    3/8x - 5/32x = 140

    12/32x - 5/32x = 140

    7/32x = 140

    x = 140 * 32/7

    x = 4480/7

    x = 640

    total people is 640 <===

    children : 3/8 (640) = 240

    men : 15/32 (640) = 300

    women : 5/32 (640) = 100
