Erica and Veronica are making different color backpack tags to sell at school.  They decide to sample the population of 300 students to find out what colors students like best. Which method will give a random representative sample?

1) Ask all the band members to name their three favorite colors.

2) Ask each student in their homerooms to name their three favorite colors.

3) Ask 15 students, whose names have been pulled from a hat at each lunch period, to name their three favorite colors.

4) As 12 of their friends to name their three favorite colors.

    The other 3 answers (1, 2, and 4) are taking samples from a defined group, and so it is not random and fair. For the first answer, you're looking into the population of the band members, and the same is for number 2. As for number 4 you're only limiting it to people that you know. For 3, you may be sampling from people you may or may not know, so everyone has the same rate of being sampled, which is fair.
