    solution is (x, y) → (1, 5)

    Since both equations express y in terms of x we can equate the right sides

    3x + 2 = - x + 6 (add x to both sides)

    4x + 2 = 6 (subtract 2 from both sides)

    4x = 4 (divide both sides by 4)

    x = 1

    Substitute x = 1 into either of the 2 equations for y

    y = - 1 + 6 = 5

    solution (x, y) → (1, 5)
