The painter would need 15/7 gallons of white paint and 6/7 gallons of red paint. You would get this by adding the 5 parts white and the 2 parts red together, in order to get 7, and then multiple the original numbers by the number of gallons. So 5 (3) / (5+2) parts white, and 2 (3) / (5+2) parts red

    In the 3 gallons, 5 parts are white and 2 parts are red. That's a total of 7 parts, so each part is 3/7 gallon. White = 5 parts = 15/7 or 2-1/7 gallon. Red = 2 parts = 6/7 gallon. Check: 15/7 + 6/7 = 21/7 = 3 gallons. Yay!
