    X=cost per pair of socks

    3x=9.99

    divide both sides by 3

    x=3.33

    5 pairs?

    x=3.33

    times 5 both sides

    5x=16.65

    5 pairs costs $16.65

    9.99/3=3.33

    if one pair = $3.33, then 5 x 3.33 = $16.65
