To add fractions that have a common numerator can we add the denominators. Look at 5/8+5/14 could this equal 5/8+4

    No, that doesn't work. In order to add or subtract fractions,

    they need to have the same denominator.

    There is no such thing (that i know of) as adding fractions with a common numerator ... although there is such thing as adding fractions with a unlike denominator
