A clerk earns $12 an hour. How much does the clerk earn for p hours of work?

    You can't do this without knowing the number of hours, but you can write an equation. The equation would be 12p. P means the number of hours they worked and 12 stands for how much they earn each hour. Therefore you would multiple both of them together.
