-1/4 or - 0.25 because - 3 + 8n = - 5 first you add 3 to both sides 8n = - 2 then divide 8 by both sides so 8n/8 = - 2/8 this equals - 1/4.

N is the variable and you are trying to find out what times 8 plus - 3=-5. The answer is -.25
