To add and subtract fractions you have to have the denominators as the same number. Say you have 1/2 - 1/4 and you need to solve. You will need to make the denominators the smallest number that they both go into. In this case, they both go into 4.
Since the fraction we need to change, 1/2, has a numerator of 2, and 2 times 2 is four, you need to multiply the numerator and denominator by 2. Then you get 2/4. Now subtraction is easy!
Subtract the numerators and keep the denominator. 2/4 - 1/4 = 1/4
