How to do subtraction of fractions

    3/4 - 1/4

    The bottom numbers are already the same. Go straight to step 2.

    Subtract the top numbers and put the answer over the same denominator:

    3/4 - 1/4 = 3 - 1/4 = 2 / 4

    Simplify the fraction:

    2/4 = 1/2

    You must make sure the demonimators (number on the bottom) are both the same.

    to do this, find the LCM (lowest common multiple), eg 3 and 4 would be 12. if you don't know it, times the two denominators together and simplify later.

    once they are the same, simply minus the top numbers and leave the denomiator the same.

    simplify is necessary.
