The sum of two numbers is 69. The larger number is three less than twice the smaller number. Find the numbers.

    If the 2 numbers are x and y:

    x + y = 69 ... (1)

    x = 2y - 3

    x - 2y = - 3 ... (2)

    Subtract: (1) - (2):

    x - x + y - (-2y) = 69 - (-3)

    y + 2y = 72

    3y = 72

    y = 24.

    From equation 1:-

    x + 24 = 69

    x = 45.
