    For starters, we need to calculate the original total price (the price he wouldve had to pay if there was no discount). If he bought 6 books, and every book costs $8, then he wouldve had to pay 6*8 dollars or 48 dollars.

    Now, he got 20% off of the price, meaning they took 20% of the total price and subtracted that from the total price.

    Lets calculate 20% (which can also be written as 20/100, or 2/10):

    48 * (2/10)

    48*2 / 10

    96/10 = 9.6

    This is what the cashier took off the total price.

    48.00 - 9.60 = 38.40

    So he spent $38.40 in total on books.
