If f (1) = 3 and f (n) = - 2f (n-1) + 1, then f (5) =

    F (5) = - 2f (4) + 1

    f (4) = - 2f (3) + 1

    f (3) = - 2f (2) + 1

    f (2) = - 2f (1) + 1

    Therefore:

    f (2) = - 2 (3) + 1 = - 5

    f (3) = - 2 (-5) + 1 = 11

    f (4) = - 2 (11) + 1 = - 21

    Therefore f (5) = - 2 (-21) + 1 = 43
