Twenty increased by 5 times the sum of a number and 2 is the same as 6 decreased by 3 times the number

    20 + 5 (x + 2) = 6 - 3x

    Distributive property.

    30 + 5x + 10 = 6 - 3x

    Add 3x to both sides.

    30 + 8x + 10 = 6

    Simplify left side.

    40 + 8x = 6

    Subtract 40 from both sides.

    8x = - 36

    Divide both sides by 8.

    x = - 4.5 (This is your answer.)
