John has a dog run that measures 4 m by 6 m. He wishes to double the area by increasing the length and width by x meters.

- Write an expression for the new area.

- Use an equation to find by how much the length and width should be

increased, and hence the dimensions of the new dog run enclosure.

    Area1 = 4*6 = 24m²

    Area2 = (4+x) (6+x) = 24+4x+6x+x³

    = x²+10x+24

    x²+10x+24 = 2 (24)

    x²+10x+24 = 48

    x²+10x-24 = 0

    x²+12x-2x-24 = 0

    x (x+12) - 2 (x+12) = 0

    (x+12) (x-2) = 0

    x = 2, x can not be - 12

    Increase is of 2m

    Hence the new dimensions are:

    6m * 8m
