I'm sorry, but I have to seriously question the whole process.

    - - What does "the angle between the Earth and sun" mean?

    - - How in the world does he measure the distance between the Earth and sun?

    - - How are either of these related to the distance between the Moon and Sun?

To me, this "scientist's" methods are as defective as this question is.
