    Morales family drove for 78 miles

    Solution:

    Given that,

    The rental agency chargers a weekend fee of $35.00 and 12 cents per mile

    1 cents is equal to 0.01 dollar

    1 cent = 0.01 dollar

    12 cent = 12 x 0.01 = 0.12 dollar

    Therefore,

    Total bill amount = 35 + 0.12 per mile

    Let "x" be the number of miles driven

    Total bill amount = 35 + 0.12x

    Given that final bill was $ 44.36

    44.36 = 35 + 0.12x

    0.12x = 44.36 - 35

    0.12x = 9.36

    Divide both sides of equation by 0.12

    x = 78

    Thus they drove for 78 miles
