A bird flies from the bottom of a canyon that is 81.8 feet below sea level to a nest that is 596 3/5 feet above sea level. what is the difference in elevation between the bottom of the canyon and the birds nest

    Subtract.

    596 3/5 - (-81.8) [81.8 is below sea level so it is negative]

    566.6 + 81.8 [Convert to decimal and distribute negative]

    = 678.4 feet
