You have to set up an equation! x being the dryer and x-40 being the washer because it's 40$ less, and it's x + (x-40) = 710 because both combined are 710$! and then you just solve!

    (710 - 40) : 2 = 335$ (washer)

    335 + 40 = 375 (dryer)
