On each of the four days, jack read 1/8 of the book. 1/8 is 12.5 percent. if 12.5% is 40%, the a proportion can be set up to see the total number of pages which is 320

    1/3 = 2/6 ... + 1/6 = 3/6 or 1/2 of the book. Now there is 1/2 left to read 40 pgs each day ... 160 pgs ... 160 is half the book. So 160*2 = 320 total pages.
