7 with piece fitting 8 without piece fitting

    Step-by-step explanation:

It depends on how you feel about using pieces of tile.

Your room dimensions in terms of the size of a tile are ...

    (12 ft) / (1.5 ft/tile) = 8 tiles

    by

    (13 ft) / (1.5 ft/tile) = 8 2/3 tiles

Then the area in terms of tiles is ...

    (8 tiles) (8 2/3 tiles) = 69 1/3 tile squares

If you use pieces to fill in the places where you need 2/3 of a tile, then you need 7 boxes to get more than 69 1/3 tiles.

    __

If you don't want to use tile pieces to fill a space, then you will need ...

    (8 tiles) (9 tiles) = 72 tile squares

To get that number, you will need 8 boxes of tiles.
