    When I taught school, I tried to impress upon my students that the counting systems of the ancients was so crude that it was a miracle they could come up with any kind of estimate especially one like 3 and 10/71.

    There is mention of pi in the Bible (somewhere in 2nd Kings). It gives a value of 3. You make think that is a pretty poor estimate. but if you knew how the counting system worked, you'd be impressed by how good the answer was. The history of man is one of baby steps until now when we are making giant strides in almost every field that involves numbers. Any mysteries have multiplied by just as much.
