What are the solutions of 2x2 + 16x + 50 = 0? by completing the square

    2x^2+16x+50=0 divide by 2

    x^2+8x+25=0 subtract 9 from both sides

    x^2+8x+16=-9 complete the square

    (x+4) ^2=-9 square root both sides

    x+4 = 3i you get an imaginary number, thus there are no real numbers that will fulfill the above equation. Graphing calculator will show you the same result.

    divide through by 2:-

    x^2 + 8x + 25 = 0

    (x + 4) ^2 - 16 + 25 = 0

    (x + 4) ^2 = - 9

    x+4 = 3i or - 3i

    x = - 4 + 3i, - 4 - 3i
