    Y - 12 = 4y

    Subtract 4y from both sides.

    y-12-4y=4y-4y

    -3y-12=0

    Add 12 to both sides.

    -3y-12+12=0+12

    -3y=12

    Divide both sides by - 3.

    -3y/-3=12/-3

    y=-4
