There are 96 new houses being built in a neighborhood. Last month, 1 over 4 of them were sold. This month, 1 over 3 of the remaining houses were sold. How many houses are left to be sold?

    1/4 of 96 were sold ... replace "of" with *

    1/4 * 96 = 96/4 = 24

    So the first month 24 houses were sold so that leaves ...

    96 - 24 = 72 houses.

    1/3 of 72 were sold the next month

    1/3 * 72 = 72/3 = 24

    24 houses were sold the second month so there are ...

    72 - 24 = 48 houses left
