    The independent variable is the x-value.

    Plug 5 into the equation for x;

    -2 (5) + 1 = - 9 (5, - 9)

    -2 (5) - 1 = - 11 (5, - 11)

    You left out the sign before the 1 in your problem so you'll have to see which one it is.
