After giving away 3 1/2 apples to his friends, a child is left with 8 1/4 apples. How many apples did the child have originally? Set up and solve an equation to answer this question.

    you have to make them mixed numbers, so 8 1/4 would be 33/4 and 3 2/4 would be 14/4
