    The two fractions that you gave are equivalent ... 12 is a common denominator. you have to multiply 3 * 4 to get 12. so if you multiply the same number by the numerator 2 * 4 = 8.

    2/3 * 4/4 = 8/12

    The reason they are equivalent when you multiply by 4/4 is because you are just multiplying by 1 (4/4 = 1). 1 times anything is itself. So the way it looks changes but the value stays the same.
