A recipe calls for 3/4 cup of butter. Angie wants to triple the recipe, but she has only 1 5/8.

How much butter must she borrow from a neighbor?

    So tripple of 3/4 is 3/4 times 3/1=9/4=2 and 1/4

    so 1 and 5/8

    1 ad 5/8+x=2 and 1/4

    2=1+1

    1=8/8

    1/4=2/8

    8/8+2/8=10/4

    1 and 5/8+x=1 and 10/8

    subtract 1 from both sides

    5/8+x=10/8

    subtract 5/8 from both sides

    x=5/8

    she must borrow 5/8 cups
