    6 inches wide

Explanation: First, 12 inches long and 9 inches wide can be turned into a ratio which is 12:9. If you simplify that, it becomes 4:3. 4:3 = 8:x. 4 x 2 = 8, so 3 x 2 = 6. Therefore, x = 6. That is how I got that answer that if Roberto's new drawing is 8 inches long, then it will be 6 inches wide.
