    Let's say Ronnie is thinking of X.

    If 2 (x) = x+5, we would first distribute the 2.

    2x = x+5

    We would then need to isolate the variable. We would do so by getting all variables to one side. The easier choice would be to subtract x from both sides.

    2x=x+5

    -1x - 1x

    This becomes

    x=5

    Ronnie is thinking of the number five.

    5•2=10 and 5+5=10.
