    So

    ollie=x

    x-8=y

    y=3x-16

    subsitute y=3x-16 for y in the first equation so

    x-8=3x-16

    subtract x from both sides

    -8=2x-16

    add 16 to both sides

    8=2x

    divide both sides by 2

    4=x

    ollie is 4
