6. A surveyor walks the perimeter of a piece of government land. He notes that the area of the land

is 4,000,000 square feet. The length of the land is 900 more feet than the width. Find the length

and the width of the land, in feet.

    B) l * w = 4,000,000

    B) l = 4,000,000 / w putting this into A)

    A) 4,000,000 / w = w + 900

    A) 4,000,000 = w^2 + 900 w

    A) w^2 + 900 w - 4,000,000

    Solving by quadratic formula

    width = 1,600 length = 2,500

    Double-Check

    1,600 * 2,500 = 4,000,000

    Length = width + 900

    2,500 = 1,600 + 900
