    If you mean fraction,

    Tom: 2/3

    Sam: 1/4

    Now we change the denominator.

    Tom: 6/12

    Sam: 3/12

    6/12 + 3/12 = 9/12

9/12 can be simplified, so 3/4 of the pie was eaten.

    4/4 - 3/4 = 1/4

    The answer is 1/4.
