From his home, Clayton would have to walk 4 miles north to get to his friend Miki's house and 1 mile east to get to his friend Danny's house. One day, Clayton walked from his home to Danny's house. Together, Danny and Clayton cut directly through the field that separated them from Miki's house. When they finished playing at Miki's, Clayton walked back home. In all, how far did Clayton walk? If necessary, round to the nearest tenth.

    The houses form a right triangle. Using a²+b²=c² you will find that the distance from Clayton’s house to Danny’s would be 4.1 miles. Adding it all up, the distance would be 9.1 miles of walking.
