How can you identify the opposite and the absolute value of a rational number?

    The absolute value is its distance on a number line from 0. The absolute value of 5 is five. The absolute value of - 2.75 is 2.75. The opposite is basically the number multiplied by negative one (change the symbol). The opposite of a negative number is positive and the opposite of a positive number is negative.
