    I'm assuming that you would like to solve this equation for y:

    3y + 2 = 5

    3y = 3

    y = 1

    As an explanation of what I did, I first subtracted 2 from both sides so that I could isolate the y. Since the y had a coefficient of 3 I had to divide both side by 3, which gave us that y = 1.
