    Jo Bob Jo,

Linear equations have some rules to follow to be in the club.

    1) No exponents on the variables (other than the implied 1 ... all variables have an exponent. If you don't see it, then it's what I call a ninja 1 ... it's there, you just don't see it!).

    2) No variables in the bottom of fractions.

    3) Variables can't be in square roots, absolute values, etc.

This equation is linear, my friend. It has an x and a y and they follow the rules.
