    The associative property applies to addition and multiplication. The reason is that for both of these operations you are combining numbers to get a total.

    With addition, you are putting values together. It would not matter how you grouped these to put them together. The result would be the same.

    For multiplication, you are grouping amounts together to get a total. It would not matter how these were grouped, the result would still be the same.
