Functions 1 and 2 are shown below:

Function 1: f (x) = - 4x2 + 6x + 3

A graph of a parabola with x intercepts negative 1, 0 and 1, 0 and a vertex of 0, 3 is shown.

Which function has a larger maximum? Type your answer as 1 or 2.

    You already have the maximum of the second function because it is the y-component of the vertex. This is 3.

    You coul tray to find the maximum value of the function 1, by finding it vertex. You should know this procedure, but now it would be enoug if we demonstrate that the vertex is greater or less that 3.

    Try with x = 0 in the function 1.

    You will get f (0) = 0 + 0 + 3 = 3

    Try with x = 1; f (1) = - 4 + 6 + 3 = - 4 + 9 = 5.

    Then, although we have not found the maximun of the first function, we do know that it has a larger maximum than the second function.

    Answer: 1
