What is the power rule

    Say we have a function, f such that f (x) = x^r. If f is a real number and is differentiable at x, then:

    f' (x) = rx^ (r-1)

    Which means the derivative of f is equal to x times the original exponent r to the r minus 1 power. This only works if f satisfies the conditions previously described, however.
