Diane has $1.20 in dimes and nickels. she has a total of 13 coins. how many of each kind does she have?

    120cents

    10d+5n=120

    divide both sides by 5

    2d+n=24

    13 coins

    n+d=13

    we have

    2d+n=24 and

    d+n=13

    muliptly 2nd equation by - 1 and add to first

    2d+n=24

    -d-n=-13 +

    d+0n=11

    d=11

    d+n=13

    11+n=13

    n=2

    11 dimes

    2 nickles
