A bathtub contains 60.5 gallons of water. When the drain plug is pulled, the tub drains at an average rate of 4.5 gallons per minute. In how many minutes will the amount of water in the bathtub be 24.5 gallons?

    Find the number of gallons that need to be drained:

    60.5 - 24.5 = 36 gallons will need to be drained.

    Divide the number of gallons that need to drain by the rate:

    36 gallons / 4.5 gallons per minute = 8 minutes.
