Consider the two functions given below.

Which of the following pairs of transformations causes the graphs of the functions to have the same y-intercept?

f (x) = 4x+1

g (x) = 3^x-2

f (x) - 7 and g (x) - 4

f (x) + 1 and g (x) + 2

f (x) + 5 and g (x) + 5

f (x) - 1 and g (x) + 1

    The correct answer is f (x) - 1 and g (x) + 1.

    The y-intercept of f (x) is 1; it is in slope-intercept form, f (x) = mx+b, where b is the y-intercept. 1 is the b-value, so 1 is the y-intercept.

    To find the y-intercept of g (x), replace x with 0:

    3^0-2 = 1-2 = - 1

    To make them the same, you can shift f (x) down 1, - 1, and g (x) up one, + 1.
