In the adjoining figure, O is the centre of a circle, PQ and RS are

two equal and parallel chords. If the radius of the circle is 5 cm

and the distance between the chords is 8 cm, find the length of the

chords.

    making perpendicular "A" from center "O"

    we get, OA=4cm (half of 8cm)

    Now,

    In triangle POA,

    h^2=p^2+b^2

    5^2=4^2+b^2

    25=16+b^2

    9=b^2

    b=3cm

    PA=3cm

    hence, length of chords=3+3=9cm
