    So,

    We have 16 gal. initially.

    First subtract 12 from 16.

    16 - 12 = 4

    Now, when we subtract 2 qt. from it, we imagine one of the gallons in 4 parts (4 qt. = 1 gal.)

    4 - 2 = 2

    There will be 3 whole gallons with 2 quarts, or 3 gal. 2 qt. left.
