Ricky needs 3 1/4 cups of sugar to make candy. He already has 2 1/2 cups. How many more cups of sugar does he need?

All I personally need to know is if I need to add or subtract. So for ex. If you tell me to add, that won't be giving away the total answer because I still need to solve it.

You would need to subtract the current amount from the total amount.

3 1/4 - 2 1/2
