First, distribute the numbers
3 (x+1) = - 2 (x-1) + 6
3x+3 = - 2x+2+6
3x+3 = - 2x+8
Subtract 3 from the left to get rid of it and move it to the right
(3x+3) - 3 = (-2x+8) - 3
3x = - 2x+5
Add 2x from the right to get rid of it and move it to the left.
(3x) + 2x = (-2x+5) + 2x
5x = 5
Divide both sides by 5
5x/5 = 5/5
x = 1
