We need to examine the natural numbers.

The natural numbers are the counting numbers,

    1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, ...

The number 1 is neither prime nor composite.

All natural numbers greater than 1 are either prime or composite.

A prime number is a number that has exactly two factors, itself and 1.

A composite number has more than 2 factors.

A composite number is a natural number greater than 2 that is not a prime number.

    Examples:

    Prime: 2, 3, 5, 7, 11, ...

    Composite: 4, 6, 8, 9, 10, 12, ...
