Terry wants to make a triangular design on her driveway. She wants to paint an 8 ft. green line on one side, and a 17 ft. blue line on the second side, and an 8 ft. yellow line on the third side. Write the convincing argument to show that Terry's design is not possible using indirect reasoning.

    If we suppose that blue side (17 ft) is basement line we can't construct a triangle from the other two sides with a length of 8, their sum must be greater than 17

    If we suppose that sides of the triangle is a, b and c, there is a theorem that says:

    that one side of the triangle must be greater than the difference of the other two and smaller than their sum.

    a - b < c < a + b or b - c < a < b + c or a - c < b < a + c

    In this case: a = 8, b = 17 and c = 8

    8 - 8 < 17 0 < 17 < 16 This inequality is not true which means we can not construct triangle with given measurement.
